Painted Popcorn Ceiling Removal: The Hard Job We Handle for You
You sprayed it with water. You waited. You scraped. Nothing. Paint seals popcorn texture so water can’t soak in — which is why painted ceilings fight back, gouge the drywall and take three times as long. Let a licensed pro who does this every week handle it.

Why Painted Popcorn Is So Hard to Remove
Unpainted popcorn soaks up water and softens, so it scrapes off fairly easily. Paint (especially oil-based or several coats) makes a shell over the texture. Water beads up and runs off. If you scrape harder, you tear the drywall paper underneath — and then you’re repairing the whole ceiling, not just removing texture.
How Pros Remove Painted Popcorn
- Scoring or sanding the paint layer lightly (only after a clear asbestos test) so water can get through.
- Adding a little dish soap or a removal solution to the water to help it soak in.
- Working small sections and keeping them wet.
- Wide, sharp blades held at a low angle to avoid gouging.
- Skim coating after removal to fix tears and give a smooth surface.
- Covering instead when removal would wreck the drywall — new 1/4″ or 3/8″ drywall over the old ceiling. See cover a popcorn ceiling.
The Asbestos Problem Is Worse With Paint
Paint doesn’t make asbestos safe to remove. It just makes the job rougher, and rough scraping or sanding throws more dust. If your home was built before the mid-1980s, get a lab test before anyone scores, sands or scrapes. If it’s positive, only a licensed abatement company should remove it.
What It Costs
Expect painted popcorn to cost more than unpainted — it takes more labor and usually more drywall repair after. See the popcorn ceiling removal cost guide for typical ranges, then get a written quote.

Painted Popcorn Questions
How do I know if my popcorn ceiling was painted?
Spray a small spot with water. If it darkens and softens in a minute or two, it’s probably unpainted. If water beads up or runs off, it’s painted.
Can you remove painted popcorn without making a mess?
Not really — but a sealed room, covered floors and closed vents keep the mess in one place.
Is covering better than removing painted popcorn?
Sometimes. If removal would badly damage the drywall, hanging thin drywall over it can be faster and cleaner. It’s also an option for asbestos ceilings you don’t want removed.
