WET POPCORN · DON’T SCRAPE IT
Popcorn Ceiling Water Damage in Las Vegas: Stop, Test, Repair
Water turns popcorn texture into mush. It sags, flakes and drops on the floor — and if your home is older, that texture may contain asbestos. Wet, crumbling asbestos is exactly the kind you don’t want to touch. Here’s what to do, step by step.
Asbestos test first · Licensed repair · Insurance-ready paperwork

TEST FIRST. Popcorn, stucco and cottage-cheese ceilings in homes built before the mid-1980s may contain asbestos. You can’t tell by looking. Don’t scrape, sand or drill until a sample is tested. Learn about asbestos testing →

Stop: The First 30 Minutes
- Stop the water at the source or the main shut-off.
- Close off the room. Shut the door and turn off the A/C or fans serving that area so loose texture isn’t blown around.
- Don’t sweep, vacuum or scrape fallen popcorn. Mist it lightly with water and leave it.
- Keep kids and pets out.
- Photograph everything for your insurer.
Test: Find Out What’s in It
If your home was built before the mid-1980s, have the damaged texture tested before anyone cleans it up or cuts out the drywall. Results usually come back in a few days. Clear result: a regular drywall pro can repair it. Positive: a licensed abatement company handles the wet material and cleanup.
Repair: Two Ways to Fix It
| Option | What happens | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Patch and re-texture | Damaged section cut out, new drywall, popcorn patch sprayed to blend | Small area, clear test, you’re keeping the popcorn |
| Remove the whole ceiling | Water damage is the push to get rid of popcorn in the room | You were already thinking about a smooth ceiling |
Patching popcorn so it blends is tricky — new texture rarely matches old, painted popcorn perfectly. Many homeowners use the repair as the time to remove the popcorn in that room.
Insurance and Paperwork

Wet Popcorn Ceiling Questions
Can I dry out a wet popcorn ceiling and leave it?
If it’s a small spot and the drywall is still solid after drying, sometimes. But wet popcorn often loosens and stains. Have it looked at — and tested if your home is older.
Is wet asbestos safer?
Water keeps fibers from flying while it’s wet, which is why abatement crews wet material on purpose. But once wet texture dries and crumbles, it can release fibers. Don’t disturb it.
Who do I call first — a plumber or a ceiling pro?
